Choosing binding
How to pick the binding, spine, paper and cover for your document.
- Wire is double-loop steel wire. The pages lie flat when open
- Wire suits reports, training manuals and handouts
- Coil is a plastic spiral. It flexes, so it suits documents that fold back on themselves or travel in a bag
- Coil suits plan sets, cookbooks, technical manuals and thick documents
- Count every printed page: a 60-page report is 60 pages, not 30 sheets
- Wire spines: 5mm (up to 30 pages), 8mm (31 to 50), 11mm (51 to 80), 14mm (81 to 120)
- Coil spines: 16mm (121 to 140), 20mm (141 to 180), 25mm (181 to 230), 33mm (231 to 290)
- 5mm wire and the 16mm to 25mm coils are white. 33mm coil is black
- 8mm, 11mm and 14mm wire come in White or Black
- 90gsm is the everyday office bond, opaque enough for double-sided print
- 100gsm is a heavier bond for proposals and tenders
- Both are uncoated
- Clear front + black backing: a clear acetate sheet on top and a black card behind
- Custom printed cover: a 300gsm A4 front sheet, printed full colour from your artwork
- Pick either, both or neither. With no cover, your first printed page is the front

Can I get my own document bound without printing it here?
Yes, but that path is a separate quote. Use the binding-quote form linked at the top of this page. Once you accept the quote, drop the printed pages to 63 Queen Victoria St, Fremantle. The configurator on this page prices print AND bind together.
What is the difference between wire and coil binding?
Wire binding uses crimped double-loop steel wire and is the office-report standard up to about 120 pages. Coil binding uses a flexible plastic spiral and is the right choice for thicker documents (up to 290 pages) and for documents that will be rolled back on themselves repeatedly (the coil flexes; wire will deform).
Does it come with a cover?
Only if you add one. Covers are optional extras, and the default (cheapest) path has no cover at all, which works fine for internal documents where your printed first page is the cover. "Clear front + black backing" adds a clear acetate sheet on top and a black card behind: the acetate lets your printed first page show through, the black back is opaque and protects the last page. Both options show their price in the configurator before you check out.
What about custom printed covers?
A custom printed cover is a single 300gsm A4 sheet printed full-colour from your artwork, replacing the lighter body stock on the front only. The back stays body stock unless you also add "Clear front + black backing", which puts a black card behind. Pick both for a branded 300gsm front under acetate protection. Supply your cover artwork as the first page of your PDF, or upload it as a separate file and tell us in the order notes.
